In case you think there is nothing better than indulging in mouth-watering watermelon on a hot day, think twice. What about having a glass of watermelon juice?

Besides its refreshing taste, watermelon juice also has the ability to reduce PMS symptoms, relieve pain, reduce bloating and water retention, relieve constipation, and cleanse the kidneys.

1. Weight

The weight is actually the juiciness of the watermelon, meaning that you should always pick the one that feels heavy. Take a few watermelons and pick out the heaviest one.

2. Watermelon Spots

Most watermelons have a pale ‘bald spot’ whose color ranges from white to yellow. The longer the fruit says on the vine, the riper and sweeter it will be.

When the fruit is picked too soon, the ‘bald spot’ is tiny.  These fruits should be avoided as once cut off from the vine; the fruit no longer ripens and thus has less sweet taste.

The best would be to pick a watermelon with yellow or orangey spots as this indicates that the fruit is fully ripe and sweet.

3. Appearance

You should choose an oval-shaped watermelon as this is a sign that it received adequate water and sun while on the vine. Moreover, look for a melon with matt skin because a shiny watermelon is not fully ripe.

Pick the one which doesn’t have any blemishes, cuts or bruises on the skin. Although you may be tempted to choose the biggest watermelon, you should get one that isn’t too big. Avoid those which are broken down or have a hole as this allows air to get into the fruit, leading to fermentation.

4. Seeds

Most people are annoyed by the seeds and therefore pick a seedless watermelon.  However, these watermelons are genetically modified and should be avoided.

Fruits are supposed to have seeds as this indicates that they are real, rather than genetically modified.
